Lafayette County School District

The Lafayette County School District believes all children can learn, which is why its mission is to simply provide quality education to all of its students. The district has 61 percent of its faculty holding advanced degrees and 17 percent being National Board Certified.

The district has a student population of 2,500, which is an ever growing number. Lafayette High School ranks a "Level 5 Superior" among the state testing, and Lafayette Elementary and Lafayette Middle Schools both rank "Level 4 Exemplary." The district just recently added Lafayette Upper Elementary School to accommodate growth.

The district has a fairly high graduation rate at 88 percent, but is continually working toward improving this statistic, which is one of the best in the state. The district also features Renaissance Learning, Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Math programs at the elementary and middle schools. Also, after-school tutoring and reading intervention are offered.

Lafayette Elementary School

For the first year, the school served pre-kindergarten students. The program was such a success, the district decided to continue it. The pre-k program also serves students with special needs. The school also was reduced from serving kindergarten through fifth-grade students to only serving pre-kindergarten to third-grade students thanks to the completion of the Lafayette Upper Elementary School.

LES is headed up by Principal Margaret Boyd. This past year, LES ranked a "Level 4 Exemplary" on the state testing, which was up from the "Level 3 Satisfactory" it had received in previous years. This ranking included students up to the fifth grade.

Lafayette Upper Elementary School

Finishing up its first year, this new school has served the district well. The school was built to help release the pressure on the infrastructure of Lafayette Elementary School and to ease the growth issues of the district. This additional classroom space has allowed the teachers at Lafayette Elementary School to no with one year of operation completed, the school, which serves third- through fifth-grade students, will receive its first ranking when the state releases the results of the MCT in the fall. Thomas Tillman, former principal of LES, is the principal of this school.

Lafayette Middle School

This school just finished its first year under Principal Rodney Flowers. The school ranks a "Level 4 Exemplary" rating. Students in the sixth through eighth grades attend Lafayette Middle School.

Even though the school focuses on basic academics, such as math, science, English and social studies, other subjects, such as art, and extracurricular activities, such as band, choir and dance, are encouraged as well.

Lafayette High School

A "Level 5 Superior" school based on the MCT, Lafayette High School serves the county district's ninth through 12th-grade students.

In addition to academics, the school has several sports in the 4-Adivision, including Commodore football, basketball, soccer and baseball. The baseball team won the state championship in 2006.

Led by Principal Adam Pugh, the school offers a variety of courses, including several Advance Placement courses, drama and journalism. Students may also participate in the successful Air Force Junior ROTC program.

Oxford School District

The Oxford School District's mission is to produce educated, responsible citizens who are capable of taking an active role in society. The district's vision is "First in Class - The Oxford Way." The district has 41 teachers who hold National Board Certification and 150 who have advanced degrees.

The district serves 3,320 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grades. The district has two schools - Oxford Middle School and Oxford High School - ranking as "Level 5 Superior" schools on the statewide assessment while all others are considered "Level 4 Exemplary."

In addition to the regular classroom work, the district offers students after-school tutoring. The elementary schools also have reading intervention and a foster grandparent program.

The district has one of the highest graduation rates in the state at 91 percent, but has a set of action objectives to achieve a 100 percent graduation rate. The district also plans to close the achievement gap among students.

Bramlett Elementary School

Bramlett Elementary School serves approximately 675 pre-kindergarten through first-grade students. All students participate in music, art, physical education and get time in the library. Each classroom has at least two computers for the students to use daily.

The school is headed by Principal SuzAnne Liddell. Also, 18 teachers have advanced degrees and eight are Nationally Board Certified. The school is not ranked because the Mississippi Curriculum Test begins at the second- grade level.

Oxford Elementary School

Oxford Elementary School is a "Level 4 Exemplary" school based on the state MCT. This year the school is seeing a reduction in the number of students since it will no longer serve second- through fourth-grade students. Fourth graders are moving to the new Della Davidson Elementary School. Therefore, Oxford Elementary School will have more room to better serve the second- and third-grade students.

A National Blue Ribbon school, it is known for its unique museum, the Oxploratorium, which houses a grocery store, bank, kitchen, doctor's office and post office to teach students basic skills in math, reading, social studies and science.

Thirty-six members, or 67 percent of the teachers, have advanced degrees and eight have National Board Certification. Evelyn Smith will serve her first year as principal of the school.

Della Davidson Elementary

Della Davidson Elementary School is the newest addition to the Oxford School District. The school will serve the fourth- and fifth-grade students of the district. The school, which houses separate wings for each grade, a gymnasium, cafetorium and media center, is located on Commonwealth Boulevard in the new Oxford Commons development, near the intersection of Sisk Avenue and Highway 7 South.

Martha McLarty is moving from her post as the assistant principal at Bramlett Elementary School to assume the principal spot at Della Davidson.

Oxford Middle School

This is the first year Oxford Middle School will be serving the sixth- through eighth-grade students in the district. The school will be headed up by Principal Brian Harvey who formerly served Central Elementary School, which was consolidated into Oxford Middle School.

Students are team taught for their core instruction. In addition to these classes, students may also participate in Latin, art, choral music, career discovery, drama, physical education, band or teen leadership. Extra curricular activities such as football, track, basketball and the pep squad are also available to students. Oxford Middle School is a "Level 5 Superior" school.

Oxford High School

Oxford High School serves about 850 students in ninth- through 12th-grades with Bill Hovious serving as principal. A "Level 5 Superior" school, Oxford High School is one of four high schools in Mississippi to serve as a model High School Redesign site, which includes flexible scheduling, rigorous curriculum and student mentoring.

In the past decade, the school has had about 40 student be considered National Merit Photo by Bruce Newman Finalists. The high school journalism program and the Oxford Charger student newspaper are considered among the best in the nation.

Also, the school has a top-notch theater department that was chosen as only one of 37 schools in the nation to represent the district nationally at the Fringe Festival in Edinburg, Scotland in 2007.

The school also has 16 sports programs in the 4-Adivision. The school has 37, or 56 percent of its staff, with advanced degrees including six with doctoral degrees. Also, the 63-member instructional staff has an average of 15 years of teaching experience.

Oxford High School was honored as one of only two high schools in Mississippi to make the 2007 list of top public schools in the country by Newsweek magazine. The annual ranking is based on the number of students taking Advanced Placement exams as well as the International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests.

Oxford Learning Center

The Oxford Learning Center helps students whose needs are better served in an alternative academic setting. The students served are in fifth through 12th grades and each have individualized instructional and behavior plans that address six key areas: academic performance, behavior modification, functional skills, career education, character education, and employability skills.

The school is staffed with six certified teachers with a combined 46 years of experience. The school, which is over-seen by Principal Charles Dodson, also offers classes to help students earn their GED. The program focuses on job shadowing, internships and the students passing the GED test.

Oxford-University School

Oxford University School is a private school founded in 1984 with an emphasis on academic excellence and small class size. The school is accredited through the Mississippi Private School Association and has two classroom buildings, a gymnasium, outdoor science lab, writing lab and a playground situated on 10 wooded acres.

The school is located at 2402 S. Lamar Blvd., across from Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. However, plans are in place to build a new school in the near future, which will be located in Phase II of the Grand Oaks subdivision.

Currently, the school serves students in pre-kindergarten through ninth grades. The core curriculum includes mathematics, science, social studies and an integrated language arts program. Students also take computer, art and physical education classes. OUS requires students to conduct independent research projects beginning in the second grade.

Regents School of Oxford

Regents School of Oxford is a Classical Christian School which offers a Christ-centered, academically excellent education for students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.

Regents was founded in 2000. This fall, the school's enrollment is expected to climb past 100 students. Classes are small, at most 15 students. The school has 10 full-time teachers, four assistant teachers, a physical education teacher, music education teacher and art teacher, three office staff members.

Headmaster Robbie Hinton not only serves as the leader of the school, but spends time in the classroom teaching.

Regents is accredited through three agencies: the Association of Classical Christian Schools, Association of Christian Schools International and the Mississippi Private Schools Association.

Students study language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, Latin and the Bible. Students and staff attend chapel at 8 a.m. every Wednesday. The community is always welcome to visit the school during chapel or any other time.

Vocational-Technology Education

Oxford-Lafayette County School of Applied Technology

The Oxford-Lafayette School of Applied Technology serves both the Oxford and the Lafayette school districts with vocational and technical education.

The school has seven areas of study, from health-care careers to auto mechanics. Students in 10th through 12th grades can take classes at the School of Applied Technology. Because both districts provide equal funding, classes are offered to students from either Lafayette or Oxford high schools. The school is headed by director Marybeth Lowrey.

Agriculture Power, Machinery

Agriculture Power and Machinery is an instructional program designed to provide entry-level skills for the agricultural power mechanics industry. Classes teach students how to operate, maintain and repair a variety of machinery and equipment. The class, at which two credits are earned, is taught by Terry James.

Allied Health

Allied Health classes, taught by Registered Nurse Sandi Allen, teaches students about health-care career fields, basic health sciences and basic health skills in a laboratory and clinical setting.

Auto Mechanics

Automotive technology is a two-year program at which students learn the skills needed for an entry-level position in the automotive repair and service industry. The class, taught by Stuart Meagrow, teaches students about safety, tool and equipment usage, measurement, basic automotive service, brake and electronic system service.

Building Trades

Building Trades Technology classes orient students with carpentry, electrical wiring, masonry and plumbing. The class, taught by Steve Hurdle, goes through basic safety, math, hand tools, power tools, blueprints and rigging.

Computers

Business and Computer Technology is designed to train students in the basic skills and behavioral characteristics needed to be successful in entry-level office jobs.

Cooperative Education

The Cooperative Education class is a two-year program that teaches students how to prepare for work from learning about the proper business etiquette to how to obtain a job. Students are required to work a minimum of 540 hours at chosen work sites throughout the community. Students earn 2.5 credits towards graduation. The class is taught by Pam Horton.

Metal Trades

The class, taught by Perry McCormick, introduces students to working in the metal industry. Students learn the basics about working with metal, as well as how to weld and work in a machine shop.

Secondary Education

Northwest Mississippi Community College

Students in north Mississippi can take advantage of higher education opportunities at Northwest Mississippi Community College in three convenient locations: the main campus in Senatobia, Lafayette-Yalobusha Technical Center in Oxford or DeSoto Center in Southaven and Olive Branch.

Northwest is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Associate of Arts degree, the Associate of Applied Science degree, and certificates in career education.

The Lafayette-Yalobusha Technical Center at Oxford was opened in the fall of 1983 with an additional 11 acres of land for expansion being purchased in 1999. A 31,000-square-foot expansion was opened in August 2002.

Students at the Oxford campus enjoy improved facilities thanks to a recently-completed renovation of the original building. Since the opening of the 2002 expansion, the library has increased its volumes for a total of more than 9,000. At Oxford students can use online public access catalogs, Internet and MAGNOLIA databases. The library area also includes a computer lab and a group study room.

Some of the most modern science labs in the state can be found at Lafayette-Yalobusha Technical Center. Lab stations, which accommodate four students each, feature Internet access allowing students to view numerous dissection collections. The center also includes a Related Studies Lab.

Plans are underway for a 9,670 square-foot expansion that will include a new cosmetology lab with a public entrance and parking for patrons. Along with the lab will be three classrooms, seven faculty offices and a multi-office for adjunct faculty. Enrollment at that center increased for both the fall 2006 and spring 2007 semesters.

Technical majors available at Lafayette-Yalobusha Technical Center include: Medical Office Technology, Microcomputer Technology, Office Assistant, Office Systems Technology, Paralegal Technology and Surgical Technology.

Career majors available at the campus include Cosmetology, Health Care Assistant and Practical Nursing. The center includes modern classrooms, labs and a learning resources center for students.
