Shop Oxford is an outreach initiative designed to remind local shoppers the importance of shopping at home in Oxford and what it means for our community. Shop Oxford asks locals to keep the following points in mind:
- Make a personal commitment to shop less online. Did you know that sales tax collected online is causing a negative impact on your local economy?
- Support our local small businesses. Did you know the sales tax you pay for online shopping goes to the state and does not come back to the local community the same way sales tax collected at a local Oxford business does? Every little bit makes a difference locally.
- The unique character of Oxford can be defined in large part by the businesses that reside here. We have to support our local businesses so they can survive and thrive!
- Nobody wants higher property taxes. If locally collected sales tax continues to drop it will directly impact your property taxes. You don’t want that.
- Make a personal investment in your community. Did you know that for every $100 spent locally, roughly $68 to $73 of it returns to local activities.
- Shopping local helps grow other businesses. Locally-owned businesses help keep money in the local community because they often purchase from other local businesses, retail shops, restaurants, service providers, and farms.
- Shopping local keeps your tax dollars at home. Let’s all pledge to shop local and SHOP OXFORD!
- Sales tax collected goes into the general fund. These taxes go to support the City’s needs, such as public safety, public works, water and sewer, capital projects, and so on.
- Sales tax makes up about 30% of the City’s annual budget.
Shop Oxford also maintains a Facebook page (Shop Oxford) and a Twitter feed (OxfordMSChamber) which publishes daily specials at local Chamber members stores, as well as new inventory announcements, extended shopping hours, and much more.
